Facial volume naturally changes over time. Cheeks may become fatter, the transition between diferent areas of the face can become more noticeable, and features that once looked naturally full may begin to appear more hollow.

While dermal fllers are one way to restore facial volume, they aren't the only option.

Fat transfer to the face uses your own fat to restore or enhance volume in carefully selected areas. At New Body Aesthetics in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Cory Gaiser can use fat collected through liposuction, prepare it for transfer, and strategically place it within the face to create softer, natural-looking volume.

How Does Facial Fat Transfer Work?

Facial fat transfer begins with collecting a small amount of fat from another area of your body through liposuction.

Depending on your anatomy, fat may be collected from areas such as the abdomen, waist, thighs, or another appropriate donor area.

The fat is then carefully processed and prepared before being transferred into selected areas of the face.

Because the procedure uses your own tissue, the surviving transferred fat becomes part of the treated area.

What Areas of the Face Can Be Treated With Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer can be used to restore volume in several areas depending on your anatomy and goals.

Treatment may be considered for areas such as:

  • Cheeks
  • Midface
  • Lips
  • Temples
  • Areas of facial hollowing
  • Certain transitions or depressions in the face
  • Other areas where restoring volume may improve facial balance

The goal isn't necessarily to make the face fuller everywhere.

Strategic placement allows volume to be restored specifcally where it can improve contour and proportion.

Why Does the Face Lose Volume?

Facial aging involves much more than wrinkles.

Changes occur over time in facial fat, skin, collagen, muscle, and even the underlying bone structure.

As support and volume change, the face may begin to look fatter or more hollow. Shadows can become more pronounced, and folds may appear deeper even though the skin itself isn't the only cause.

Restoring volume in appropriate areas can help create a softer transition between facial features and address some of these changes.

Fat Transfer vs. Dermal Fillers

Both fat transfer and dermal fllers can restore facial volume, but there are important diferences.

Dermal fllers are injectable products that allow precise amounts of volume to be added during an ofice treatment. Results are temporary, although longevity varies depending on the product and treatment area.

Fat transfer uses fat collected from your own body. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing, while the portion that successfully establishes itself can provide longer-lasting volume.

Neither option is automatically better for everyone.

The right choice depends on how much volume you need, the areas being treated, whether you have appropriate donor fat, and your personal treatment goals.

What Happens to the Fat After It's Transferred?

Once transferred, the fat cells need to establish a blood supply in their new location.

Some of the transferred fat will naturally be reabsorbed during the healing process. Because of this, the appearance immediately after treatment isn't the final result.

The fat that successfully establishes itself becomes living tissue in the treated area.

Like other fat cells in your body, those cells can also respond to significant changes in weight over time.

Can Facial Fat Transfer Look Natural?

Yes. In fact, creating soft, natural-looking volume is one of the reasons patients may be interested in facial fat transfer.

The result depends heavily on where the fat is placed and how much is used.

Facial rejuvenation doesn't necessarily require adding large amounts of volume. Strategic restoration in areas that have become hollow or fattened can sometimes create a refreshed appearance without making the face look dramatically diferent.

Facial Fat Transfer in Cincinnati

At New Body Aesthetics, Dr. Gaiser evaluates facial fat transfer in the context of the entire face.

Rather than treating each hollow or line individually, he considers where volume has changed and how restoring it may afect the surrounding features.

This allows the treatment plan to focus on restoring proportion and creating natural transitions rather than simply making individual areas fuller.

What Is Recovery Like After Facial Fat Transfer?

Because facial fat transfer involves both fat collection and injection into the face, you'll be healing in more than one area.

Temporary facial swelling and bruising are common. The donor area may also experience soreness, swelling, or bruising similar to other small liposuction procedures.

The face may initially appear fuller than the eventual result because of swelling and the natural fat-retention process.

As healing progresses, swelling decreases and the transferred fat settles, allowing the longer-term contour to become clearer.

When Should I Consider Fat Transfer to the Face?

Facial fat transfer may be worth considering if you've experienced noticeable volume loss or would like to restore fullness using your own tissue.

You may be interested in the procedure if:

  • Your cheeks or midface have lost volume
  • Certain areas of your face appear hollow
  • You've noticed age-related changes in facial fullness
  • You want broader volume restoration rather than treating one small area
  • You're interested in an alternative to repeated dermal fller treatments
  • You have appropriate donor fat available
  • You prefer an approach that uses your own tissue

Dr. Gaiser can evaluate whether facial fat transfer, dermal fller, or another approach better matches the changes you'd like to address.

How long does facial fat transfer last?

Some transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing. The fat that successfully establishes a blood supply can remain long-term, although the face will continue to change with normal aging and weight fluctuations.

Does all of the transferred fat survive?

No. Some fat loss is expected during the healing process, which is taken into consideration when planning treatment.

Where does the donor fat come from?

Fat may be collected from the abdomen, waist, thighs, or another appropriate donor area depending on your anatomy

Is facial fat transfer permanent?

The surviving transferred fat can provide long-lasting volume, but it doesn't stop the normal aging process and can still respond to significant weight changes.

Is facial fat transfer better than filler?

They're different options rather than one universally being better. Filler offers precise temporary volume without liposuction, while fat transfer uses your own tissue and may provide longer-lasting volume.

Can facial fat transfer treat wrinkles?

Its primary purpose is restoring volume. Restoring underlying volume may soften the appearance of some folds or shadows, but it isn't a treatment for every type of wrinkle.

Can fat be transferred beneath the eyes?

Fat may be considered for certain areas of facial volume loss, but the undereye region requires careful evaluation because hollowness isn't the only cause of undereye aging.

Will gaining or losing weight affect facial fat transfer?

It can. The surviving transferred fat behaves like other living fat cells and may become larger or smaller with significant weight changes.
