A Brazilian Butt Lift, commonly called a BBL, is about more than simply adding volume. For many patients, the goal is to improve shape, enhance curves, create better proportion between the waist and hips, or restore fullness that has changed with age or weight loss.

At New Body Aesthetics in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Cory Gaiser performs buttock enhancement using your own fat. Fat is removed through liposuction from selected areas of the body, carefully prepared, and transferred to the buttocks to create a fuller, more balanced contour.

Because every patient's starting shape is different, BBL treatment is customized around your natural anatomy, available donor fat, and the type of enhancement you're hoping to achieve.

What Can a BBL Improve?

Not everyone interested in a BBL wants a dramatic increase in size.

Fat transfer can be used to address several different concerns, including:

  • Adding fullness to the buttocks
  • Improving overall shape and projection
  • Creating a rounder appearance
  • Improving balance between the waist, hips, and buttocks
  • Addressing areas that appear flat or lack volume
  • Restoring volume following weight changes
  • Creating a smoother overall silhouette

Some patients want a noticeable enhancement, while others simply want their existing shape to look fuller and more proportionate.

The goal is to create a result that complements your body, rather than trying to create the same shape for every patient.

Where Does the Fat for a BBL Come From?

The fat used during a BBL comes from your own body.

Liposuction is performed in selected areas where unwanted fat is available. Depending on your anatomy and treatment plan, donor areas may include the abdomen, waist, flanks, back, or other appropriate areas.

The collected fat is then prepared before being carefully transferred to the buttocks.

This allows the procedure to accomplish two things at once: contouring areas where you want less fullness while enhancing an area where you'd like more volume.

How Does Lipo 360 Affect BBL Results?

The appearance of the buttocks is influenced by more than the amount of fat transferred.

The surrounding waist, flanks, and lower back can have a major impact on how your curves appear.

For appropriate patients, combining BBL fat transfer with Lipo 360 may help create greater contrast between the waist and buttocks and improve the overall silhouette.

However, not every BBL requires Lipo 360. Dr. Gaiser determines which areas should be contoured based on your individual shape and goals.

How Much Volume Can Be Added With a BBL?

There isn't one standard amount of fat that's appropriate for every patient.

The amount that can be transferred depends on factors such as your existing anatomy, available donor fat, treatment goals, and what can be performed appropriately for your individual procedure.

This is also why comparing your potential results to someone else's BBL can be misleading. Two patients may want a similar look but have completely different starting shapes and amounts of available fat.

During your consultation, Dr. Gaiser can discuss what may realistically be achieved with your body.

What Happens to the Fat After a BBL?

After fat is transferred, the body begins the process of establishing a blood supply to the transferred fat cells.

Not every transferred fat cell will survive this process, so some decrease in the initial volume is expected as you heal.

Once the surviving transferred fat has established itself, it behaves much like fat elsewhere in your body. This means those fat cells can become smaller with significant weight loss and larger with weight gain.

Maintaining a relatively stable weight after healing can therefore help preserve your results.

BBL and Fat Transfer in Cincinnati

Creating an attractive BBL result involves looking at more than the buttocks alone.

At New Body Aesthetics, Dr. Gaiser evaluates how your waist, lower back, hips, and buttocks work together when developing your treatment plan.

For one patient, the priority may be increasing projection. Another may benefit more from improving roundness or creating a smoother transition between the waist and buttocks.

This individualized approach allows the procedure to focus on overall proportion rather than simply adding as much volume as possible.

What Is Recovery Like After a BBL?

Recovery after a BBL involves healing from both the liposuction areas and the areas where fat was transferred.

Swelling, bruising, soreness, and tightness are common during the early stages of recovery. Light movement is generally encouraged, while strenuous exercise and heavier activities are gradually resumed according to your postoperative instructions.

You'll also receive specific instructions about sitting, sleeping, compression, and protecting the transferred fat during the early healing period.

Your shape will continue changing as swelling decreases and the transferred fat settles, so the appearance immediately after surgery isn't considered your final result.

When Should I Consider a BBL?

A BBL may be worth considering if you would like to enhance the shape or volume of your buttocks while also contouring areas of unwanted fat elsewhere on your body.

You may be interested in fat transfer if:

  • You want more fullness or projection
  • Your buttocks appear flat or lack definition
  • You'd like better balance between your waist and lower body
  • You've lost volume following weight changes
  • You prefer using your own fat for enhancement
  • You have enough appropriate donor fat available for transfer

Your consultation with Dr. Gaiser is the best way to determine whether fat transfer can create the type of change you're looking for.

Is a BBL the same as butt implants?

No. A BBL uses fat collected from your own body to enhance the buttocks rather than using an implant

Do I need Lipo 360 to have a BBL?

Not necessarily. Liposuction is required to obtain fat for transfer, but the specific donor areas depend on your anatomy and treatment plan. Some patients may benefit from more comprehensive Lipo 360 contouring.

What if I'm very thin? Can I still get a BBL?

You need enough appropriate donor fat to perform fat transfer. Patients with very little body fat may have more limited options, which Dr. Gaiser can evaluate during a consultation.

Will all of the transferred fat survive?

No. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing. The remaining fat that successfully establishes a blood supply becomes part of the treated area.

Can I lose my BBL if I lose weight?

Transferred fat behaves similarly to other fat in your body. Significant weight loss can cause those fat cells to shrink, which may reduce some of the volume.

How long does it take to see my final BBL results?

Your appearance changes throughout recovery as swelling decreases and the transferred fat settles. Final results take time because the body needs to heal before the long-term contour can be evaluated.

Can I sit after a BBL?

You'll receive specific postoperative instructions regarding sitting and pressure on the treated area. These instructions can vary based on your procedure and stage of recovery.

Can I combine a BBL with other procedures?

Depending on your health, anatomy, and treatment plan, BBL fat transfer may be incorporated with other body-contouring procedures. Dr. Gaiser can discuss appropriate options during your consultation.
