Why Do I Still Feel Drained Even After Resting?

By: Cory Gaiser, M.D.

You’re drinking water and trying to take care of yourself, but you still feel run-down, depleted, or not quite like yourself.

Sometimes a busy schedule, travel, exercise, poor sleep, or not drinking enough fluids can leave you feeling off. But ongoing fatigue can also have many medical causes, so it shouldn’t automatically be blamed on dehydration or a vitamin deficiency.

Could I Be Dehydrated?

Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluid than it takes in. Possible signs include:

Increased thirst
Dry mouth
Dark or decreased urine
Headache
Dizziness
Fatigue

Severe symptoms, persistent vomiting, confusion, fainting, very little urination, or a rapid heartbeat require medical care, not a wellness appointment.

What Is IV Therapy?

IV therapy delivers  fluid directly into a vein. Depending on the patient’s needs and the provider’s recommendations, an infusion may also contain selected vitamins or nutrients.

Because IV ingredients enter the bloodstream directly, every patient should be medically screened beforehand.

Is IV Therapy Better Than Drinking Water?

Not necessarily. For most mild dehydration, drinking fluids is usually the first and simplest option.

IV hydration may be considered when a qualified provider determines it is appropriate. It should not replace regular hydration, balanced nutrition, sleep, or medical treatment for an underlying condition.

What Happens During an Appointment?

Before receiving an IV, your provider will review your:

Health history
Current medications
Allergies
Symptoms and wellness goals
Possible reasons IV therapy may not be appropriate

If you qualify, your infusion will be selected based on that evaluation, not simply because an IV has a trendy name.

Is IV Therapy Safe for Everyone?

No. IV therapy may not be appropriate for patients with certain kidney, heart, blood pressure, fluid-balance, or medication concerns.

Possible risks include bruising, infection, vein irritation, fluid overload, and reactions to an ingredient. Sterile preparation and proper medical supervision are essential.

IV therapy should never be advertised as a cure for illness or a guaranteed way to “boost immunity.”

Stop Guessing What Your Body Needs

If you’re interested in IV therapy, begin with a professional evaluation rather than choosing an infusion based on a trend.
