Discoloration & Hyperpigmentation Treatment in Cincinnati, Ohio
Ready to get started?
Contact UsBrown spots, sun spots, uneven skin tone, redness, and patches of unwanted pigmentation are among the most common reasons people look for treatments to make their skin appear clearer and more even.
At New Body Aesthetics in Cincinnati, Ohio, we approach discoloration by first identifying what the discoloration looks like and what may be causing it. A brown spot from accumulated sun exposure is not necessarily treated the same way as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, redness, or another pigment concern.
Instead of making this page primarily about a device such as IPL, this page is designed to help patients understand common skin discoloration and pigmentation concerns and the treatment options that may be considered after an appropriate skin assessment.
What Causes Skin Discoloration
Skin discoloration is a broad term. Changes in skin color can have many causes, including:
- Sun exposure and cumulative UV damage
- Age-related sun spots or brown spots
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or irritation
- Hormonal pigmentation such as melasma
- Redness and visible vascular changes
- Freckles and other pigment variations
- Skin injury or inflammation
- Changes that should be evaluated medically rather than treated cosmetically
Because different conditions can look similar, the first step is determining what type of discoloration is present. New, changing, irregular, bleeding, or otherwise suspicious lesions should be medically evaluated rather than treated as a cosmetic pigment concern.
Hyperpigmentation/Discolor Reviews
I recently had a facial at New Body Aesthetics and had a great experience!! The esthetician was friendly and easy to talk to, took the time to ask about my skin and any concerns I had, and explained the products she was using throughout the facial. The whole experience felt comfortable, personalized, and relaxing. The receptionist was very welcoming, and the facility itself is beautiful, easy to find, and has plenty of free parking. I would definitely recommend New Body Aesthetics!

What Can I Do for Brown Spots and Sun Damage?
Brown spots that develop after years of sun exposure are often called sun spots, age spots, solar lentigines, or hyperpigmentation. Patients may notice them on areas that receive frequent sun exposure, particularly the face, chest, shoulders, arms, and hands.
Depending on the type of pigmentation and the patient's skin, treatment options may include IPL/intense pulsed light, professional skincare, chemical peels, resurfacing treatments, or a combination plan.
The right treatment depends on the cause and depth of the pigment. This is why we recommend evaluating the concern before deciding which technology or product to use.
IPL for Sun Spots, Brown Spots and Uneven Skin Tone
IPL (intense pulsed light), sometimes called a photofacial, is one treatment that may be used for certain pigmentation and vascular concerns. Rather than making “photofacial” the focus of the page, IPL should appear as one potential solution for a concern the patient already recognizes.
IPL uses pulses of broad-spectrum light that target selected chromophores in the skin. In aesthetic treatment, it may be used for concerns such as certain brown spots, sun damage, uneven tone, and visible redness when appropriate for the patient's skin and condition.
Not every form of hyperpigmentation should be treated with IPL. An assessment is particularly important when melasma or pigment-prone skin is suspected.
What About Melasma?
Melasma commonly appears as patches of brown or gray-brown pigmentation, often on the face. Hormones, genetics, heat, and sun exposure can contribute to the condition.
Melasma is different from a typical isolated sun spot and can be persistent. Treatment commonly requires a long-term pigment-management strategy that may include diligent sun protection and topical skincare. Energy-based treatment is not automatically the right first choice for every patient.
If you are unsure whether your pigmentation is melasma, sun damage, or another condition, a consultation can help determine the appropriate next step.
Dark Spots After Acne or Inflammation
Some patients develop flat dark marks after acne, irritation, or inflammation. This is often referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
These marks are different from active acne scars that change the texture of the skin. Treatment may focus on controlling the underlying inflammation, protecting the skin from UV exposure, supporting healthy cell turnover, and using an appropriate pigment-correcting skincare or procedural plan.
Redness Is Also a Form of Uneven Skin Tone
Not every discoloration concern is brown. Some patients describe their skin as blotchy, flushed, red, or uneven.
Depending on the cause, IPL may be considered for certain visible vascular or redness concerns. Persistent facial redness can have multiple causes, however, so the appropriate treatment should be determined after evaluation.
Why Skincare and Sun Protection Matter
Treating visible pigment without addressing ongoing sun exposure can limit results. Broad-spectrum sunscreen and an appropriate home skincare routine are important parts of managing many pigmentation concerns.
Professional skincare may also be used alongside procedures to address uneven tone and help maintain results. At New Body Aesthetics, treatment plans may combine in-office procedures with a home regimen based on the patient's skin and goals.

Hyperpigmentation/Discolor FAQs
How do I get rid of dark spots on my face?
The best approach depends on why the dark spots are present. Sun spots, melasma, post-acne marks, and other pigmentation concerns can require different treatments. Options may include professional skincare, IPL, chemical peels, resurfacing, or a combination plan after evaluation.
What is the best treatment for sun spots on the face?
IPL is one commonly used option for certain sun-related brown spots, but the best treatment depends on the type and depth of pigment, skin characteristics, and whether another condition such as melasma is present.
Why is my skin tone uneven?
Uneven tone can result from sun damage, pigmentation, redness, inflammation, acne marks, hormones, and other factors. Identifying whether the concern is primarily brown pigment, redness, texture, or a combination helps determine the treatment plan.
Can IPL remove brown spots?
IPL may improve certain benign pigmented lesions and sun-related brown spots by targeting pigment with light energy. Results and candidacy vary, and suspicious or changing lesions should be medically evaluated rather than treated cosmetically.
What is a photofacial?
Photofacial is a common consumer term for IPL treatment. IPL uses intense pulsed light and may be used to address selected pigmentation, sun damage, and redness concerns. On this page, IPL is presented as a treatment option rather than the primary concern patients must already know to search for.
How do I get rid of acne dark spots?
Flat dark marks left after acne may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Treatment can differ from treatment for indented or raised acne scars and may include pigment-focused skincare, sun protection, and selected professional treatments.
Can sun damage be reversed?
The visible appearance of some sun-related pigmentation and uneven tone can often be improved, but ongoing UV protection remains important. Treatment may involve IPL, skincare, peels, resurfacing, or a combination based on the patient's concerns.
What treatment helps redness and blotchy skin?
The correct treatment depends on the cause of redness. IPL may be appropriate for certain vascular and redness concerns, while persistent or unexplained redness may require a different approach or medical evaluation.
