A skin tag that constantly catches on your necklace or a raised mole that becomes irritated every time you shave can quickly become more than a minor annoyance. Even when a growth is harmless, its location or appearance may make you want it removed.

At New Body Aesthetics in Cincinnati, Ohio, we evaluate appropriate benign-appearing skin tags and moles and ofer personalized cosmetic removal options. Because not every spot should be treated cosmetically, the frst step is making sure the growth is suitable for removal.

Depending on the growth and your skin, treatment may involve cautery, cryotherapy, or another appropriate removal method. Our physician-led team, under the direction of Dr. Cory Gaiser, will explain which option may be right for you.

Is It a Skin Tag or a Mole?

Skin tags and moles can both appear as raised spots, but they are not the same.

Skin tags are usually soft, fesh-colored growths that hang from the skin by a small piece of, tissue. They commonly develop where the skin rubs against itself, clothing, or jewelry, including the neck, underarms, upper chest, beneath the breasts, groin, and other skin folds.

Moles are formed by pigment-producing cells. They may be fat or raised and can appear tan, brown, black, pink, or close to your natural skin tone.

Most skin tags and moles are harmless, but other skin growths can look similar. An evaluation helps determine whether cosmetic removal is appropriate or whether the spot should be examined by a dermatologist.

Why Do Skin Tags and Moles Become Bothersome

You may want a skin tag or mole removed because it:

  • Catches on clothing or jewelry
  • Becomes irritated during shaving
  • Rubs against nearby skin
  • Interferes with makeup or skincare
  • Bleeds after being snagged
  • Makes you feel self-conscious

Some people are naturally more likely to develop skin tags or moles. Genetics, aging,, friction, pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight changes, and sun exposure may all play a role.

Removing a skin tag does not prevent new ones from developing elsewhere. Moles may also continue to appear or change throughout diferent stages of life.

How Do I Know if a Mole Should Be Checked?

A new or changing mole should be evaluated before cosmetic removal is considered.

The ABCDE guide can help identify warning signs:

  • A — Asymmetry: One half looks diferent from the other.
  • B — Border: The edges are irregular or poorly defned.
  • C — Color: The spot contains several colors or uneven pigmentation.
  • D — Diameter: The mole is larger than approximately six millimeters, although concerning spots can be smaller.
  • E — Evolving: The spot is changing in size, shape, color, or appearance.

A spot should also be checked if it begins itching, hurting, bleeding without an obvious cause, repeatedly forming a scab, growing quickly, or looking diferent from your other moles.

If a growth has concerning features or its identity is uncertain, you may be referred to a dermatologist for further evaluation or biopsy. Cosmetic removal should never replace an appropriate skin-cancer examination.

How Are Skin Tags and Benign Moles Removed?

The right removal method depends on what the growth is, where it is located, and how deeply it extends into the skin.

Skin tags may be treated with cautery, which uses controlled heat, or cryotherapy, which freezes the tissue. Selected growths may also be carefully removed using a medical instrument.

Removing a mole requires more consideration. Some small, raised, benign-appearing moles may be suitable for cosmetic treatment, while others may need surgical removal so the tissue can be sent to a laboratory.

A mole should not be destroyed with a cosmetic treatment when there is a medical reason to preserve the tissue for testing.

During your consultation, your provider will examine the spot and explain whether it can be treated at New Body Aesthetics or should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Does Skin Tag or Mole Removal Hurt?

The experience depends on the size, location, and removal method.

You may feel a brief pinch, cold sensation, heat, or pressure during treatment. A numbing product or local anesthetic may be used when appropriate.

Afterward, the area may be mildly red, tender, or swollen. A small scab can also form as the skin heals.

Avoid picking at the area because this can delay healing and increase the risk of infection, discoloration, or scarring. Your provider will give you aftercare instructions based on the treatment performed.

About Us

Will Removal Leave a Scar?

Any procedure that removes a growth from the skin can leave a mark.

The likelihood and appearance of a scar depend on the size and depth of the growth, removal method, treatment location, skin tone, healing response, and aftercare.

Before treatment, your provider will discuss the possibility of scarring and whether the mark left by removal could be more noticeable than the original growth.
